The festival’s main award, “Discovery of the Year,” was given to Bosnian film Grbavica directed by Jasmila Zbanic. Chairman of the jury, Iranian actress/filmmaker Niki Karimi gave out the award. Grbavica is a realistic and powerful drama set in a neighborhood of the same name in a post-war Bosnia. An honorable mention went to Hungarian film Fresh Air (Friss levego) directed by Agnes Kocsis.
The festival’s FIPRESCI-jury awarded English film Red Road directed by Andrea Arnold. Red Road is the first of three films in The Advance Party project, where the same characters portrayed by the same actors appear in different films by various directors.

The People’s choice award went to Danish film We Shall Overcome (Drömmen) directed by Niels Arden Oplev. The film has broken attendance records at home since its premiere earlier this year.

Executive officer of the Icelandic Students’ Association gave out the festival’s Human Rights Award. Mexican documentary No ONE (De NADIE) directed by Tin Dirdamal was awarded. The documentary gives insight into the harsh and terrible reality of South- and Central American immigrants on their way to the United States.

Finally, the bishop of Iceland awarded a film on behalf of the Church of Iceland. Four Minutes (Vier Minuten) by Chris Kraus took the prize home. “Two women’s destiny are intertwined in a story that raises questions on the purpose of life, freedom and talent. Both their pasts hold secrets which have tied them down. The women connect through music which in turn becomes a venue for conflict and redemption. Creative vision and human dignity are depicted with great detail in an unforgettable closing scene. The miracle of redemption and victory happens in four minutes,” said the jury of the church.

The fourth Reykjavik International Film Festival will take place from Spetember 27th to October 7th 2007.
