Film in Iceland

Film in Iceland is a project run by Invest in Iceland Agency, an agency of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. In recent years Iceland has been gaining a higher profile in the international film industry. Internationally acclaimed actors and directors have been working in Iceland with highly skilled local crews.

Special legislation has been passed in Iceland which aims "to enhance domestic culture and promote the history and nature of Iceland" by temporarily supporting motion pictures and television programmes produced in Iceland. Reimbursements are offered for film and TV production costs incurred in Iceland over the period 2001-2006. Producers can apply for reimbursements from the State Treasury of 12% of the costs incurred in the production of films and television programmes in Iceland. When more than 80% of the total production cost of a motion picture or television programme is incurred in Iceland, the reimbursement is calculated on the basis of the total production cost incurred within the European Economic Area. The reimbursement scheme does not cover production of commercials or music videos.

Applying for the 12% reimbursement is an easy straightforward procedure. Applications are sent to the Ministry of Industry and must be submitted before starting the production.

  1. Dear friends,

I’m writing a book on fantastic-mystery cinema with Italian critic Massimo Lavagnini, the most complete ever written. From Iceland we have already included a few titles (HUSID, Myrkrahöfðinginn, THE JUNIPER TREE, Kristnihald undir Jökli and some other) but we would like to increase that number. We are looking for someone disposed to provide with copies of films of the above kind but also collaborators disposed to write reviews of this and other Icelandic films of the same genres for instance titles like Baltasar Kormákur’s MYRIN or SVO A JORDU SEM A HIMNI; A HJARA VERALDAR-J.Johannesdottir; SKAMMDEGI-T.Bertelsson; ANDRA DANSEN-L.Y.Oskarsson . Let me know something, it’s important.
